Antique Brass Compound Monocular Microscope, Bausch & Lomb Optical Co. 1897, With Box

$650.00

"By the help of microscopes, there is nothing so small, as to escape our inquiry; hence there is a new visible world discovered to the understanding"
- Robert Hooke

Before transforming into the behemoth they are today, Bausch and Lomb was one of the oldest continually running companies in the U.S. When they started out as an optical company in Rochester NY, they were highly regarded for their high-quality lenses. They mainly produced lenses for eyeglasses, monocles, telescopes, binoculars, cameras, projectors, and microscopes. This charming Bausch and Lomb microscope was acquired by Pimbleberry from a local university science department. It has seen plenty of use but it has also been well maintained over the years. It is fully functional and incredibly gorgeous due to the patina it has acquired over its long life. If you are a medical or scientific equipment collector then this piece would be a wonderful addition to your collection. This model features an iron stage with clips, 3 objective lenses, 2 ocular lenses, course and fine adjustments, an original sub-stage illuminator mirror, and much more. The original box is also included with several extras.

When I stumbled across this microscope I was immediately flooded with memories of my youth. It conjured images from biology class in high school when we would pair off and do experiments, the smell of formaldehyde, the trauma of dissections, the various colored flames produced by burning various gasses, and most of all, discovering the tiny invisible world full of life that is all around us at all times. It sounds romantic now, but at the time I didn't know how good I had it. The school did not exactly have the budget to replace lab equipment every couple of years so we worked with what we had, and that included these heavy, brass microscopes which, though frequently used by careless teens, had been carefully maintained by Mr. Schmidt since (probably) before I was even born. That was a long time ago, longer than I would like to admit, but it's moments like this that keep us collecting. You never know when an object will remind you of a time in your life that you rarely, if ever think back on. What I once considered to be an old "hunk of junk", I now consider being beautiful and timeless. Its funny how that works.
